The RSC's Visiting Scientist on February 12, 2008 will be Kathleen Ryan, Environmental Education Specialist at Presque Isle State Park Kathleen's talk is entitled: “Plovers: The Species, Its Status and Its Impact on Presque Isle”
The piping plover, Charadrius melodus, is one of the most controversial and talked about birds sighted on Presque Isle State Park. Once a nesting species on Presque Isle, this small shore bird was last seen in 2005 when three males were spotted at Gull Point. Because of federal designation of critical habitat for the species on the park, many park operations are impacted by its potential presence. Join naturalist and park plover monitor Kathleen Ryan for a presentation on the piping plover’s life history, threats to its survival, and efforts by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and Presque Isle State Park to restore this federally endangered species to the Great Lakes Region.
